CHRIS NEWELL - BASEBALL/SOFTBALL INSTRUCTOR
Chris has been in professional baseball since 1997 as a player, scout and manager. He played
his college ball at Northwest Missouri State University where he had a .346 career batting average. He served as a tri-captain during his senior year.
After a successful college career, he was fortunate enough to play two years of professional baseball. Chris collected his first hit as a professional on July 8, 1997 with a single to left off of former Boston Red Sox 1986 World Series hurler Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd.
Chris received a Gold Glove in 1998 in the minor leagues.
After his playing career, he earned his college degree from The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 1998 in Kinesiology specializing in Sports Management and Communication.
In 2003, Newell made his professional managing debut with the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League, making him the youngest manager in professional baseball.
Chris served as a scout for
the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1999 - 2005. In January of 2006,
Chris accepted a scouting position with the New York Yankees. He also served as head coach for the
Motor City Marauders and Michigan Rams of the Great Lakes Summer
Collegiate League from 2000-2002. He became the Associate Head
Coach for Oakland University in December of 2001 and remained
in that position until July of 2005. Through Newell's private
instruction, he has seen over 110 players into the college ranks
and 35 have signed professional contracts. Including Mike Cervenak, who is the all time hit leader at the University of Michigan. Mike made his Major League Deut with the Philadelphia Phillies on July 12, 2008.
